Behavior as Communication 101

Separate an observable action from an assumption about its meaning.

5–17 MINUTES / CORE CONCEPT

Start with understanding.

Behavior can give us information about a child’s experience, but it does not tell us the whole story. A slammed notebook might accompany confusion, disappointment, tiredness, or a request to stop. In this course, “Behavior = Communication” invites curiosity; it is not proof of a hidden motive. The Developmental Response System (DRS) organizes our response into Understand, Connect, and Respond. We describe what happened, make room for the child’s perspective, and choose support plus a clear boundary when needed. Understanding a behavior does not make unsafe actions acceptable. Start with one ordinary, low-risk family moment that you would like to handle differently.

17–25 MINUTES / CASE & RESPONSE

A moment to think through.

Maya, 8, closes her workbook and says, “I’m done.” Identify what you observed and two things you still need to learn. Rehearse this response and adapt the words: “This seems hard right now. Show me where you got stuck. We can look at the first step together.” If Maya does not want to talk, offer a short pause and return time.

Use this fictional case for your tool and reflection.
