OUR APPROACH · DEVELOPMENTAL RESPONSE SYSTEM™

Get curious.
Build connection.
Respond with intention.

The Developmental Response System (DRS) is Rico’s Development’s teaching framework for exploring behavior as communication and turning reflection into practical choices.

Try the approach

A THOUGHTFUL STARTING POINT

Look at the situation
as well as the behavior.

Begin with the facts you can observe. Consider development, the environment, communication, expectations, and the support available. A difficult interaction is a reason to ask better questions; one behavior alone does not tell you someone’s diagnosis or intent.

Connection means listening, using clear language, and respecting the person’s dignity. An intentional response combines that understanding with boundaries, responsibilities, and the safety procedures of your setting.

DRS organizes these habits into guided educational practice. You will try tools, explain your reasoning, receive feedback, and revise your work. The complete DRS course framework is an original educational program; clinical outcomes are not promised.

TRY A FICTIONAL EXAMPLE

See the approach in action.

Choose a setting, move through the three steps, and check your reasoning. This is a short sample of the way you’ll practice in a course.

Fictional practice case

A transition that feels too big.

A fictional child pushes a chair back and says “no” when a caregiver announces that it is time to stop drawing and clean up.

Understand

Start with what you can observe.

The activity ended without a warning. Notice the timing and surroundings; ask what made the transition difficult before assigning a motive.

Check your reasoning

Which observation gives you useful information?

HOW LEARNING BECOMES PRACTICE
