5–17 MINUTES / CORE CONCEPT

Start with understanding.

Behavior gives educators information about a student’s experience, skills, and surroundings. It rarely supplies a complete explanation by itself. A student who closes a notebook may need clarification, feel embarrassed, be finished, or be responding to something outside the lesson. DRS begins with Understand: describe what happened and what remains unknown. Connect: invite the student’s perspective through an accessible, private interaction. Respond: provide a useful support or teaching step and maintain any necessary safety boundary. Safety can require action before discussion. The aim is meaningful access to learning and communication; immediate quiet is only one possible observation. Today, practice changing your first question from a judgment about character to a question about what the situation requires.

17–25 MINUTES / CASE & RESPONSE

A moment to think through.

During independent writing, Jordan closes the notebook and says, “I’m not doing this.” The teacher has only seen this moment. Identify two possibilities and one fact you would check. Rehearse and adapt this response: “Something about this task isn’t working yet. You can point to the part you need help with, or we can look at the first step together.”

Use this fictional case for your tool and reflection.
